Opportunity.

Post 38 12th October, 2006

Hi there everyone ~ I hope all is going well for you and

the weather is treating you right. We had one very hot

day, today, the first of the season – 35 degrees Celsius

which is about 98 degrees Fahrenheit. There will be more

like it and hotter, but we had a frost a week ago.!!!

Thank you all who commented on Grandma’s Apron. My

memory of my Mother while picking plums in an orchard

when a tiger snake reared up it’s ugly head, ready to strike.

So Mum threw the apron-full of plums at it. and both she

and it left in different directions. I don’t know if she ever

went back for more pluns, but I would guess that she did.

Tonight I have a serious medical warning about Strokes.

Recently it was National stroke week, and as well as asking

for donations, they offered the following warning signs - - -

I hope none of us need it, but it doesn’t hurt to be aware,

1. Numbness, weakness or paralysis of face, arm, leg on one

or both sides of the body.

2. Difficulty speaking or understanding.

3. Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall.

4. Loss of vision, sudden blurred or decreased vision in 1 or

both eyes.

5. Headache (usually severe and sudden)

6. Difficulty swallowing.

Quick test - - -

Facial weakness – can the person smile? Has their mouth

or eye dropped?

Arm Weakness – can the person raise both arms.

Speech problems – can the person speak clearly and

understand what you say.

If the person you are observing cannot do one of these

steps, Act fast and call an ambulance.

Now for another warning I received in an e-mail - - -

Cruise Control (No not Tom, no-one can contol him !!)

I wonder how many people know about this?

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks
ago and totaled her car.
A resident of Kilgore , Texas , she was traveling
between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining, though
not excessively, when her car suddenly began to
hydroplane and literally flew through the air. She
was not seriously injured but very stunned at the
sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what
had happened he told her something that every driver
should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH
YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON.

She had thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise

control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the
cruise control is on and your car begins to hydroplane
when your tires lose contact with the pavement, your
car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you
take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that
was exactly what had occurred.

The highway patrol estimated her car was actually
traveling through the air at 10 to 15 miles per hour
faster than the speed set on the cruise control.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed,
on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE
CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT
IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning. We tell
our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe
speed - now we will also tell them to use the cruise
control only when the pavement is dry .

The only person the accident victim found, who
knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had
had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained
severe injuries.

A verse tonight called “Opportunity.”

How often you’ve sat, and thought to yourself

“Why is it MY plans are all on the shelf?

Why is it, that opportunity, never

Seems to be somewhere in sight for me, ever?

Why is it that others get all the breaks,

Their chances come often, and each of them takes

The golden delights that just “happen” as planned.

Why is it, that MY chance, is never at hand?

Well, nobody knows, but this much I’d say - - -

Never give up – for one day, one day

Your goal will arrive and offer it’s fill

Your day MUST come – it must – and it will.

Now for some jokes - - - -

Things you should never say to a police officer - - -

1. I can’t reach my licence unless you hold my beer.

2. Sorry, Officer, I didn’t realize my radar detector

wasn’t plugged in.

3. Aren’t you the guy from the Village People?

4. Hey, you must have been doing about 125 mph to

keep up with me. Good job!!

5. You’re not gonna check the trunk, are you?

6. I pay your salary.

7. Do you know why you pulled me over? OK just so

one of us does.

<><><><><>

If you love something, set it free.

If it comes back, it will always be yours.

If it doesn’t come back, it never was yours to begin with.

But, if it just sits in your living room,

messes up your stuff, eats your food,

uses your telephone, takes your money

and doesn’t appear to realize that you had set it free - - -

- - - - You either married it or gave birth to it.

Revenge of the Blonde. . .

A blonde walks nto a bank in New York City and asks for

the loan officer. She says she is going to Europe on

business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer says the bank will need some sort of

security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys

to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in

front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks

out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the

loan.

The bank’s president and his officers all enjoy a good

laugh at the blonde for using a $259,000 Rolls as collateral

against a $5,000 loan. An employee drives the Rolls into

the bank’s underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the blonde returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.

The loan officer says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had

your business, and this transaction has worked out very

nicely; but we are a little puzzled.

We checked you out and found that you are a multimilliomaire.

What puzzles us is – why would you bother to borrow $5,000?

The blonde replies - - - “Where else in New York City can I

park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be

there when I return?”

<><><><><>

An 8 year old girl asked her Dad, who was working in the yard.

“Daddy, what is sex?” The father was very surprised that she would ask that question, but decides that if she was old enough to ask, then she is old enough to get a straight answer. He proceeded to tell her all about the “birds and the bees”.

When he had finished explaining, the little girl was looking at him with her mouth hanging open. The father asked her, “Why did you ask this question?”

The little girl replied, “Mum told me to tell you that dinner

would be ready in a couple of secs.”

A few quotes - - - -

God helps those that help themselves, but God help those

caught helping themselves.

If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it.

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. - - - William Morris.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. - - - Proverb.

He who has health has hope. And he who has hope has

everything. - - - Arabian Proverb.

Our five senses are incomplete without the sixth - - - a

sense of humour. - - - Anonymous.

Enough for tonight folks, Stay well and happy, Merle.

I wrote a post about cruise control and then deleted it because there were too many conflicting opinions on the net.

I may put it back on there.

Great reminders on stroke warning signs. We enjoyed the joke about the Rolls Royce in the parking garage. Guess she wasn't a dumb blonde at all!
((hugs))

After reading Granny's comment I did a little internet checking, too. Generally they are more interested in checking the authenticity of the stories, although they all seem to agree that the advice is sound, ie. DON'T USE CRUISE CONTROL IN THE WET.

Thanks for the warning, Merle. I wasn't aware of that, although I don't think I would have been inclined to use CC on wet roads. What the heck - it's that long since it rained anyway and my memory doesn't go back that far ...LOL

I had never heard that about cruise control. It certainly makes sense to me. We can't be too careful.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Merle...some very good stuff here...again. We actually had a few snow flurries today...not for long, and nothing really stuck. Then the sun came out like nothing ever happened...crazy day. Chillier..definitely leaning toward autumn weather now. I hope it doesn't get any hotter for you...98 is quite enough. Thinking of you....take care...

Merle, Thanks for the heads up on the Cruise control. Who would have known, I had never heard of this and will pass it on, as it will be of great value. They should spread the word so as it might save someone else's life.

Love the Rolls Royce joke...that was hilarious! :)

*still laughing at the brilliance of it all*

And thanks for the stroke advice, as we have that in our family history, so it's good to know.

You are having a heat wave and we had snow today!! Ugh! It snowed on and off all day but thank goodness it didn't stay long on the ground...it's staying very cold though! I knew about the cruise control because over here in Northern Ontario we are forever being warned not to use it when there's ice on the roads or when it's raining, for the exact same reasons you told us. Enjoyed reading everything you posted today:-) Hugs to you Merle...xox

The stroke symtoms are good to know and that blonde wasn't so dumb after all...who can park a car for 2 weeks for that piddly amount.
