What is a boy ?

Post 41. - - - 14th October, 2006.

Hello again Friends ~ Nice to be back with you tonight.

Thanks for the comments on the Deck of Cards, it seems

to have brought back a few memories of our younger days.

I hope you are all well, or as well as can be and enjoying

the weekend. It has been pleasant here after a couple of

early hot days.

I would like to wish my dear friend Horizon a very Happy

Birthday for tomorrow 15th October. Would you pop over to her blog,

via the link, to wish her a happy day. Thanks.

Tonight I have a story called “What is a Boy?”

Between the innocence of babyhood and the dignity of manhood we

find a delightful creature called a boy. Boys

come in assorted sizes, weights, and colors, but all boys have

the same creed --- to enjoy every second of every minute of

every hour of every day --- and to protest with noise (their only weapon)

when their last minute is finished, and the adult

males pack them off to bed at night,

Boys are found everywhere ---on top of, underneath, inside of,

climbing on, swinging from, running round, or jumping to.

Mothers love them, little girls hate them, older sisters and

brothers tolerate them, adults ignore them, and Heaven protects them.

A boy is truth with dirt on his face, beauty

with a cut on his finger, wisdom with chewing gum in his hair,

and the hope of the future with a frog in his pocket.

He likes ice-cream, knives, saws, Christmas, comic books, the boy

across the street, woods, water (in it’s natural habitat),

large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday mornings and fire engines.

He is not much for Sunday School, company, school, books

without pictures, music lessons, neck-ties, barbers, girls,

overcoats, or bedtime. Nobody else can cram into one pocket

a rusty knife, a half-eaten apple, three feet of string, an empty

cigarette packet, two gumdrops, six half-pennies, a sling

shot, a chunk of unknown substance, and a genuine supersonic

code ring with a secret compartment.

A boy is a magical creature. You can lock him out of your workshop,

but you can’t lock him out of your heart, You can get him out of your

study, but you can’t lock him out of your mind.

Might as well give up --- he is your captor, your goaler, your boss,

and your master ---a pint sized, freckle faced, cat chasing bundle

of noise. But when you come home at night with only the shattered

pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with

the two magic words--- “HI DAD.”

Now for some jokes - - - -

Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences

actually appeared in bulletins and were announced in church.

1. Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at

Calvery Methodist. Come, hear Bertha Belch all the

way from Africa.

2. Announcement in a church bulletin for a national Prayer and

FASTING Conference : “The cost for attending the Fasting

and prayer Conference includes meals.”

3. The sermon this morning: “Jesus Walks on the Water.”

The sermon tonight: “Searching for Jesus.”

4. Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get

rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don’t

forget your husbands.

5. The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been

cancelled due to a conflict.

6. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community

Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “Hell” to someone who

doesn’t care much about you.

7. Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help.

8. Miss Charlene Mason sang “I will not pass this way again,”

giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

9. Next Thursday there will be try outs for the choir. They

need all the help they can get.

10. The Rector will preach is farewell message after which te

choir will sing : “Break Forth into Joy.”

11. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24

in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

12. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be –

“What is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice.

13. Scouts are saving aluminium cans, bottles and other items to be

recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

14. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment

and gracious hostility.

15. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM – Prayer and medication

to follow.

16. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the Presbyterian Church.

Please use the large double doors at he side entrance.

17. The Assocate Minister unveiled the church’s new tithing

campaign slogan last Sunday: “I Upped My Pledge ! – Up Yours!”

<><><><>

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Rick, the

computer guy to come over. Rick clicked a couple of buttons

and solved the prblem. He gave me a bill for a minimum service call.

As he walked away, I called after him, “So, what was wrong?”

He replied, “It was an I D ten T error.”

I did not want to appear stupid, but noneteless inquired:

“An ID ten T error? What’s that - - in case I need to fix it again?”

The computer guy grinned - - - “Haven’t you ever heard

of an ID ten T error before?” “No”, I replied.

“Write it down,” he said, ”and I think you’ll figure it out.”

So I wrote out - - - - I D I O T.

<><><><>

A young woman brings home her fiance to meet her parents.

After dinner the mother tell the father to find out about him.

The father invites the fiance to his study for a drink.

“So, what are your plans?” the father asks the young man.

“I am a Torah scholar,” he replies. “A Torah Scholar, Hmmm,”

the father says, “admirable, but what will you do to provide a

nice house for my daughter to live in , as she’s accustomed to?”

“I will study,” the young man replies, “and God will provide for us.

“And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she

deserves? asks the father. “I wll concentrate on my

studies,” the young man says. “and God will provide for us.”

“And children?” asks the father, how will you support children?”

“Don’t worry, sir, God will provide,” replies the fiance

The conversation continued like this and each time the father

questions, the young idealist insists God will provide. Later the

mother asks, “How did it go Honey?” The father answers,

“He has no job, and no plans, but the good news is he thinks I am God.”

Just a couple of quotes as this has got too long.

There is so much good in the worst of us,

And so much bad in the best of us,

That it hardly becomes any of us

To talk about the rest of us. - - - Anonymous.

When you are kind to someone in trouble, you hope they will

remember and be kind to someone else. And it’ll become like

a wildfire. - - - - Whoopi Goldberg.

Bye for now, Take care of each other, Merle.

Your definition of a boy sounds vaguely familiar - I think I was one of them at one time - and still maybe one on occasion. :) ec

Hi Merle, having four brothers, I can really relate to the poem about boys! That's from my perspective, as a parent I wouldn't know only having two daughters. But I have four grandson and all parts of that poem fits some of them perfectly.

Thanks, Merle. Hope all is well in your world.

Love & hugs

Robyn xoxo
