The Ode.

Post 443 ~ ~ ~ Friday, 25th April, 2008.

Hello Everyone ~ ~ I hope this has been agood day for you as
it has been rather traumatic for me. Today is our Anzac Day
and there have been marches and dawn services etc all over
the country. I have enjoyed the old music from the War years
which has been on radio. There was a lot shown on TV also,
and I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a bugler
play "The Last Post" which is so sad and haunting. It was
played at my late husband's funeral, so it always affects me.

Anzac Day is on the 25th April every year, and it is the day
that we and New Zealand remember all those servicemen
and women who have paid the supreme sacrifice in too
many wars. Also to support those still serving our countries.

I will post the short Ode that is always recited on this day.

The Ode.

They shall not grow old,
As we who are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning;
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

My friend Robyn sent me the next one. Thanks, Robyn.

This should be posted in all schools and work places.

Love him or hate him, hr sure hits the nail on the head
with this. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High
School about 11 things they did not and will not learn at
school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct
teachings created a generation of kids with no concept
of reality and how this concept set them up for failure
in the real world.

Rule 1 Life is not fair - get used to it.

Rule 2 The world won't care about your self-esteem.
The world will expect you to accomplish something
BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 You will NOT make $60,000 a year right
out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with
a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 If you think your teacher is tough, wait until
you get a boss.

Rule 5 Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.
Your grandparents had a different word for burger
flipping. They called it opportunity.

Rule 6 If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault,
so don't whine about your mistakes. Learn from them.

Rule 7 Before you were born, your parents weren't
as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying
your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk
about how cool you thought you were. So before you
save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents'
generation, try delousing your closet in your own room.

Rule 8 Your school may have done away with winners
and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they
have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY
TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't
bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 Life is not divided into semesters. You don;t get
summers off and very few employers are interested in
helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 Television is NOT real life. In real life people
actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs

Rule 11 Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up
working for one.

If you can read this, thank a teacher..
<><>

Saun : What's in your bag?
George : Chickens.
Shaun : Will you give me one of them?
George : No.
Shaun : If I guess how many you have in your bag, then
will you gove me one?
George : Certainly !! If you guess correctly, I;ll give
you both.
Shaun : Six !!

The Company Personnel department had carefully
interviewed thirty-eight people for the job of
assistant to the financial director.

The chief executive thought that one candidate --
Charles -- seemed ideal. Charles had been to a major
public school. Not only was he a qualified accountant
but Charles also had a master's degree in business
administration. He seemed fully aware of the latest
creative accountancy techniques.

"Charles," said the chief executive, "we've decided to
offer you the job. And as you are so well qualified we've
decided to start you off on a slightly higher salary than
the one advertised. We'll pay you $48,000 a year."

"Thank you," replied Charles, "But how much is that
per month ?"

Th e male gymnast needed to raise money to support
himself while in training and to pay for his travel
and hotel expenses during overseas competition.

He was therefore delighted when he was asked to
participate in a secret mission for a month during the
peak tourist season at the local zoo

The zoo's much loved ape had just died. It was a great
tourist attraction as he was extremely acrobatic,
jumpimg from branch to branch, swinging from the ropes,
doing somersaults.

The zoo did not want to admit that the ape had died as
many people came to the zoo just to watch the ape. Without
such an attraction, the number of visitors would decline --
and the zoo needed every paying customer it could get to
survive.

The gymnast was therefore asked to dress up in the ape's skin
and act like the ape tumbling, swinging and being very energetic.

The gymnast loved this new work and all went well until the
last week of the engagement. After a particularly energetic.
swing on the rope he accidently let go and hurled out of the
cage and into the lion's enclosure.

As he landed, he looked up to see a fierce lion approaching.
He started to scream for help, but the lion put a mighty paw
across the gymnast's mouth and hissed, "Sssh. Do you want
us both to lose our summer jobs ?"

Hi Merle. I did a google search to hear the songs you mentioned to see if thew were the same as a military song called Taps. They are different but I want to say that when I listed to the one you mentioned that was played at your late husband's funeral, I had tears for you. I just feel so bad for you that you had to experience that. (HUG)

Then I read your jokes and was laughing through my tears. I sent a couple of your jokes to family.
Once again I thank you for a touching and still funny post.
God Bless.

Once again some good things to read, and some funny stuff. I guess I am officially an ADULT. LOL. Also I don't think Shaun is too smart. Have a wonderful week-end. We had another beautiful day here. Had to mow again, this way everything will look nice for the week-end. Tomorrow we'll have our 8 year old granddaughter for part of the day.

It is sad to think of all those young men who will never age and those who carry the war scares throughout their lives. Those of us who have not seen war are truly grateful to those who have.
I love the definitions. LOL I do not know which was the funniest. The picture of your Mom with the birds is delightful. I just love Jerry's blog. He is very kind and takes us along with him when he travels.

Prince got a day off for the eighty he put in for overtime. He is spending it cutting the other four acres. I used the small mower and cut the front on Wed afternoon.

Did your little seeds take off in the planter? Peace

G'Day Merle,
Hugs for your anzac day memories. I feel the day strongly too.I grew up having a soldier for a daddy. He is gone now. I went to th march here in Canberra and there was a crowd estimated at 30,000. He would have been proud that thee was so many people there. Kev Rudd is a good speaker too.
Comment on your blog; The Helen Steiner Rice poem sounds like you.
Love Linda.

Good post, Merle.

I'm with Bill Gates. What he said is so true. I also believe that 'political correctness' has been destructive not only to our young, but to the entire social/political system....I could go on for hours....

But the rules I'm going to print out and tape on my fridge..

Have a good day, Merle..:)

I didn't know about Anzacs Day. It's like our Veteran's Day on November 11 or our Memorial Day the last Monday of May. Raf just looked up Anzac Day and showed me a photo of soldiers at a grave in New Zealand.

Love all the stores. Had heard Robyn's Bill Gates story before and liked it. Love the summer job one!

I'll be sending your package next week.

Hi Merle,
Anzac Day sounds like a wonderful time to honor your soldiers. I can well understand how a song played at your late husband's funeral would make you sad.
That ode is lovely and touching.
Great definitions too!
Stay well my friend!
love and ((hugs))

Dear Merle,

I'm sorry that Anzac Day has been traumatic for you. The Last Post must be very sad and beautiful to hear. The Ode is a heart felt tribute to the fallen. Thank you for sharing it with us, dear Merle. I hope you have cheered up some by today.

I enjoyed the definitions. Cutting money in half without damaging the paper is something I do at times! And I like the one about wrinkles the best as well! LOL. Ah, and the rules are so good. Rule 2 is right on! I like rule 5 as well. Come to think of it, they're all good.

Funny about the gymnast and the lion. Hahaha. And wow, Eat to Live, Not Live to Eat goes way back, doesn't it? And yet it's such great advice for today.

Well, dear Merle, I enjoyed my visit, and am glad I got the chance to get here today, as tomorrow is Sunday, and I am picking up Eileen once again, for church.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend. I hope your weather is nice, and life is treating you well.

Love and blessings,

Renie

Hi Merle

Anzac Day reminds me of my father...he served in the NZ Navy...as when we went to the RSA for dinner, the Ode was always recited at 6 pm and everyone would stand to say it. He's been gone 13 years now and I feel sad that he hasn't seen his lovely great grandchildren growing up. Maybe he has...

Hope all is well with you, dear Merle.

Hugs

ANZAC Day is always very sobering, isn't it? Seeing those wonderful young men and women going off so bravely to fight for our country.

Love the jokes, as usual. I think my 'love dress' needs ironing, too....lol.
