Meredith's Letter.

Post 457 ~ ~ ~ Tuesday, 27th May, 2008.

Hi Everyone ~~ I hope you are all doing OK and
that the week has started well for you. Mine is
going great so far. Three of my neighbors took
me out for a lovely lunch yesterday, and today I
have been shopping. So I am all stocked up again
and must get into some cooking tomorrow and get
the house in order, as my daughter and most of the
family are coming up for a couple of nights, which
will be very nice. I mostly only see them at Christmas.

We have had some birthdays lately including Big Dave
on 25th and my brother Peter has his 72nd on the 28th
and Janice's Mother on the 29th. So I hope Happy
days are heading their way and they all have terrific
birthdays. A Happy Birthday to you all.

My dear friend Patty aka Old Lady Lincoln has given me an
award ~~ " Blogs that make my day" Thank you dear Patty.

I have to thank Tom who designed it, and pass it on to five (5)
bloggers that make my day.

I have chosen to pass this on to Lady Di and Pea and Renie
and Jim and Nick. I really enjoy all these folk's blogs and
read them daily, so they make my day. A lot of others do also
but I am restricted to five.

Tonight I have a nice story that my friend, Barbara sent me.
Thank you once again, dear Barbara.

I have called it Meredith's Letter. Hope you enjoy it.
The letter.
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The
day after she died, my 4 year old daughter, Meredith
was crying and talking about how much she missed
Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God
so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would
recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so
she dictated these words:

Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday
and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am
happy that you let me have her as my dog, even though
she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls
and swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see
her. You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey
and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put
our return address. Then Meredith pasted several stamps
on the front of the envelope, because it would take lots
of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That
afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post
office. A few days later she asked if God had gotten the
letter yet. I told her I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper
on our front porch addressed, "To Meredith," in an
unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book
by Mr. Rogers called, "When a Pet Dies." Taped to the
inside front cover was the letter we had written to God
in it's opened envelope. On the opposite page was the
picture of Abbey and Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven.

Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey
right away.

Abbey isn't sick any more. Her spirit is here with me
just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your
dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't
have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am
sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep
and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your
mother for helping you write it and sending it to me.
What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her
especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I
love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there
is love.

Now for some jokes. Thank Linda for the first one.

When Grandma goes to court. Lawyers should
never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if
they aren't prepared for the answer.

In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting
attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly,
elderly woman to the stand. He approached her
and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?" She
responded, "Why yes, I do know you Mr. Williams.
I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly,
you have been a big disappointment to me. You lie,
you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people
and talk about them behind their backs. You think
you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to
realize you'll never amount to anything more than
a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else
to do, he po
inted across the room and asked,
"Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes I do. I've known Mr.
Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy,
bigoted, and has a drinking problem. He can't build
a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice
is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention
he cheated on his wife with three different women.
One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him."

The defence attorney near;y died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the
bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,

"If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me,
I'll send you both to the electric chair."

One from our friend Jeanette . Thanks Jan and
I hope you are feeling better.

Inner Strength.

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches
and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people
with your troubles.

If you can eat the same food every day and be
grateful for it.

If you can understand when your loved ones
are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without
resentment,

If you can ignore a friend's limited education
and never correct him/her,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better
than a poor friend,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, . . . . .

"Mummy," asked a little girl, "do men ever go
to heaven ?"
"Why, yes, of course, dear," answered her
mother. "Why do you ask?"

"Because, I've never seen angels with whiskers."
"Well," replied the mother, "some men do go
to heaven, but they only get there by a close shave."

A fellow went into a bar and ordered a drink.
He gulped it down and to the amazement of the
bartender, also ate the goblet, except for the stem.
He ordered another, swallowed the drink, and
again ate the goblet, leaving the stem.

The bartender then called in a psychiatrist,
explained the man's strange behavior, and asked
if he thought the man was an eccentric.
"He must be," the shrink replied. :The stem's
the best part." ~ ~ ~ P. R. Engele.

Two prisoners were making their escape over
the roof of the jail when one of them dislodged
a tile. "Who's there?" shouted a guard.

The first prisoner replied with a convincing
imitation of a cat's meow. Reassured, the guard
went back to his rounds.

But then the second prisoner dislodged another
tile. The guard repeated, "Who's there?"

"The other cat," answered the prisoner.

Beautiful story and funny jokes again. You are a treasure for all us bloggers. Thanks for the award and I think I might have figured out how to display them except on a post. We who do not think with that side of the brain have a hard time figuring things out. Puppy and Prince show me lots of things and then I cannot remember them unless I excute them on a regular basis. Glad your daughter and family will come for a visit and that your 74th was a happy one. Peace

Dear Merle, Sounds like you've been having a blast going out to eat, visitors and all. And more coming later in the week. So happy you are enjoying every minute of it. Just don't run out of steam. LOL That happened to me today and I had to take little nap. One reason I am so late getting around to the blogs I like to check on each day. Enjoy your company. Sleep well tonight and get all rested up for the visitors.
Your friend, Patty

Thanks for the birthday announcement, Merle. I appreciate it.

The death of a pet is sad for young and old alike. I remember hearing Jimmy Stewart when he was in his 60s talk about his old dog Beau. It's hard not to hear his poetic tribute to Beau without shedding a tear:

I loved Meredith's letter. Nice one Merle. The best doggie I had was when I was 16. My sister bought me a dog advertised in the paper as "lonely Lois" I named her princess. She was a mixture of Labrador and white German shepherd and lived to be 18 years old.We had many adventures and happy times together and I loved her dearly.

Dear Merle,

I am glad things have been going so well with you, and that your daughter and family are coming for a visit. What could be nicer than that? Oh, and thank you for including me in the neat award! This way, I get it twice, which is always nice! :-)

Awww, Meredith's Letter is so touching and sweet. Brings tears to the eyes.

Very funny story about Mississippi Grandma. And the Family Dog story is a good one. Haha. Well, as usual, I enjoyed the jokes greatly, and always leave here with a chuckle and a smile, dear Merle. I am so glad you had such a nice birthday, and I hope the rest of the week will be wonderful as well. Take good care, and see you again, soon.

Love and blessings,

Hi Merle, it looks like you are having very nice neighbors too! I knew your relatives are all so nice to you.

Thank you for the nice award, I will post this one too. I should award this to you, but since you already have it, I will pass it along. In my very next post, probably this afternoon!

Every word you wrote today was nice, starting with Meridith's dog, Abbie. I remember the book but haven't read it. I should, our Adie is getting old. In fact she is older than I am now in dog years, and I'm about a half year older than you are.

Don't those lawyers in Mississippi have a hard time!
Cheers,
..

Merle, I liked the story about Merideth and her doggie that died. Wasn't it sweet that she got a letter back from God along with a nice book from Mr. Rogers. So Sweet.
