The Serenity Prayer.

Post 265 - - - - Sunday, 22nd July, 2007.

Hi Everyone ~~ I hope that you are having a great weekend and all is
well with you. We are into Sunday evening here, so not much of it left
for us. I am waiting for the arrival of Grandson Joh, (short for Johannes
pronounced Joe) and have the table set, and will just have to heat meals.

I would like to wish Kali of Tasmania, a very Happy Birthday for
tomorrow. I hope you have a lovely day and enjoy it fully.

To those I tagged with the Schmooze award, I do not know how to put
the icon on, but you will find it at Peter 's blog if you wish to post it. He
may put it on my blog at some stage.

I will start with the photos again. (If I miss a day, I may not remember
how to do it !!) - so until I run out - - - - -

This is the first garden ornament I ever got, as a gift from my son, Geoff and
I have had it for years. These are our laughing Kookaburras and every now
and then I see one or two in the trees at the back of my house. Love them.

This is a small one I bought at the craft market Bec took me to.

These are the lovely ornaments that my dear friend Pea sent me for my
birthday in May. They are so pretty and I love them. Thanks Carole !!

And this is where they live, on my hall stand either side of a unicorn above
a swag that I made a few years ago. You are not supposed to see the image
of me taking the photo. I look better when it is a blurry photo !!

BTW The other day when Joh was looking at some of the cow photos on my
blog, there was one that I said had a saddle on a tree trunk. He said it was a
Nelson Clock. So on enlarging it, there are no less than 3 clocks showing.
I don't know if they were designed by Nelson or not. It is in Post 260.

Tonight I am posting the full Serenity Prayer, as posted by our friend
Ms. Vickie recently. It is such a lovely prayer. Thank you for posting
it Vickie, and I hope you do not mind me repeating it.

The Serenity Prayer.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment in time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasnably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

Reinhold Niebuhr. (1892 - 1971)

Few jokes - - - -

"I bet you don't know how many sheep there are in this field?"
said the English farmer to his Irish visitor.
The Irishman glanced around the field and then replied,
"Three hundred and eighty-six."
The farmer was astonished. "That's incredible !. You're
perfectly right. How did you manage it ?"

"Oh, it was quite simple," said the Irishman. "I just counted
the number of legs and divided by four."

An aeroplane found itself in trouble and crashed into the jungle,
leaving only one survivor, a beautiful long limbed blonde who would
have been the envy of many female film stars.

She was thrown from the plane before it exploded, only to land at
the feet of a cannibal and his son. The son circled his quarry, licking
his lips at such a feast dropping from the sky. "Can I have first bite
of her?" he asked his dad.

The adult cannibal also circled the beautiful form before him but his
mind wasn't on the dinner table.

"I' ll tell you what, " he touched his son with his spear, "Let's take
her home . . . and eat your Mom."

A girl was going to be married, but as the wedding day approached
she grew nervous. This was noticed by her mother who asked if
anything was the matter.

"Not really," replied the girl, "but the thought of going away on
honeymoon that;s troubling me."
"Now, my dear," said her mother, "don't let that worry you.
Why, when I went off on my honeymoon . . ."

"Ah ! It was all right for you," retorted the daughter, "you went
away with Dad !!"

The local vicar was invited to do an after dinner speech because he
was well known in the area for offering more than one humerous tale.

Noting a goodly number of reporters in the audience and knowing he
could dine regularly on the same stories time and again, he decided to
have a word with them and ask them not to repeat his stories.

To his amazement, the following day all the papers said, " The vicar
told stories we are unable to print."

Joh has just arrived, so will close this now. Love and Best wishes to
you all. Till, next time, Cheers, Merle.

Well, Merle, Peter has evidently placed the Schmooze award logo on your blog. I just copied it from there.

The Serenity Prayer is, of course, one of my favorites. Its author, the Reverend Reinhold Niebuhr, was a member of my denomination and a graduate of Eden Theological Seminary, the seminary from which I, too, graduated.

Good morning—or is it afternoon on your side of the world—Merle. I dropped by to answer your questions regarding Reinhold Niebuhr. (I really must do a blog post or two about him).

No, I didn’t know him at the seminary we both attended: he lived from 1892 to 1971 and I entered seminary in 1984 (I think: I graduated in 1987).

Yes, he wrote more than the Serenity Prayer: much more! He was an advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt; he taught at Union Seminary in New York City; in 1950 Time Magazine named him the most influential theologian of the first half of the 20th Century; President John Kennedy awarded him Presidential Medal of Freedom. His writings and teaching influenced many people: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said that Niebuhr was one of the two men who most influenced his theology and life (the other was Mahatma Gandhi).

That a bit of info about Reinhold Niebuhr. Thanks, Merle, for asking!
