Little Things in Life.

Post 708 ~ ~ ~ Thursday, 21at October, 2010.

Hello again my friends ~~ I hope you are all well and your lives are happy.
I am going along OK. and the weather is getting warmer which is nice.
Today was 24 C and tomorrow 25C which is about 75 and 77 F. Just nice.
My son John is on another motorcycle ride to South Australia and will be
staying tonight in Peterborough, S.A. I had a friend do a heap of weeding
for me the other day which filled my green bin completely, and today he
put it out for me. THEN I discovered it wasn't the green bin night, until
next week. And so I put out the recycle and rubbish bins. But I could not
get it back in as it was much too heavy. So I am watching out for a neighbor
to help me with it. At least I had cooked some food for Mike, but didn't
want him to have to come back this evening. Tomorrow, my lawns get cut
so maybe he will move it for me.

First item tonight was sent to me by my good friend, Patricia
and I liked it. Thank you dear Patty. Little Things in Life.

Lisa Beamer on Good Morning America --If you remember she's
the wife of Todd Beamer who said, "Let's Roll!" and helped
take down the plane over Pennsylvania that was heading for
Washington DC, Back in 9/11.

She said it's the little things that she misses most about Todd,
such as hearing the garage door open as he came home, and
her children
running to meet him. She's now the Mom of a
beautiful little girl, Mary. Lisa recalls this story :

"I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago
whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week
after his death, she shared some of her insight with a class-
room of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming
in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over
she moved a few things from her desk and sat down there.

With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said,
"Class is over, I would like to share with all of you, a thought
that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important.
Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, and
appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this
fantastic experience will end.It can be taken away at any moment.

Perhaps this is the powers way of telling us that we must make
the most of every single day. Her eyes, beginning to water, she
went on, "So I would like all of you to make me a promise. From
now on , on your way to school, or on your way home, find some-
thing beautiful to notice.

It doesn't have to be something you see, it could be a scent,
perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone's house,
or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the
leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one
autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground. Please look for these
things, and cherish them. For although it may sound trite to
some, these things are the "stuff" of life. The little things put
here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted.

The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books
and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more
things on my way home from school that I had all semester.
Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember
what an impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate
all those things that sometimes we overlook.

Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour
today. Go barefoot. Or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off
on the way home tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone.
For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often
regret, but the things we didn't do.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but
by the moments that take our breath away.

An interesting Mountain Wings item called "The Facts of Death."
These are supposedly true facts of death. Perhaps what you
are so scared of isn't really so scary.

1. More people are killed by donkeys annually than are
killed by plane crashes.

2. More people are killed each year by coconuts than sharks.
Approx. 150 people are killed each year by coconuts.

3. You are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than
by a poisonous spider.

4. Fleas have the distinction of killing more people than all
the wars man has ever fought. The "Black Death" plague
killed 1/4 of Europe's population in the 14th century, caused
by germs transmitted from rodents to humans by fleas.

5. The animal responsible for the most human deaths
worldwide is the mosquito.

6. The male praying mantis cannot copulate while it's head
is attached to it's body. The female initiates sex by
ripping the male's head off.

7. A hundred years ago, the average life expectancy in the
United States was forty-seven.

8. Today, only one in two billion people will live to be 116
or older.

9. Your statistical chance of being murdered is 1 in 20,000.

10. There are five times as many deaths due to the negligence
of doctors as there are deaths due to firearms.

11. On average, 100 people choke to death on ball point pens
every year.

12. Robert Hershey, of Hershey Chocolate fame, died when
he fell into a vat of chocolate and drowned.

13. Dr. Alice Chase, who wrote "Nutrition for Health" and
numerous books on proper eating, died of malnutrition.

14. Adolph Hitler's mother seriously considered having an
abortion but was talked out of it by her doctor.

15. When Mahatma Gandhi died, an autopsy revealed that
his small intestine contained five gold Krugerrands.

16. When Thomas Edison died in 1941, Henry Ford
captured his last dying breath in a bottle.

17. In 1845, President Andrew Jackson's pet parrot was
removed from his funeral for swearing.

18. Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, was present
at the assassinations of three presidents : his father's,
President Garfield's, and President McKinley's/ After the last
shooting he refused to ever attend a state affair again.

19. When Mark Twain was born on Nov 30th 1835, Halley's
Comet was visible over Florida, Missouri. Mark Twain predicted
in 1909 that he would die when it returned. He was right.
When he died on April 21, 1910, Halley's Comet was once
again visible in the sky.

"I'm not afraid of death. It's just that I don't want to be
there when it happens." ~ ~ Woody Allen.

Now some jokes from my Canberra friend, Thanks Linda.
A child's view of Thunderstorms.

A little girl walked to and from school daily.
Though the weather that morning was questionable and
clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school.

As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along
with lightning.
The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her child
would be frightened as she walked home from school. She
also feared the electrical storm might harm her daughter.

Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove
along the route to her child's school.
As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.
at each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, smile.

More lightning followed quickly and with each, the little girl
would look up at the streak of light and smile.

When the mother drew up beside her, she lowered the window
and called, "What are you doing?"

The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God
keeps taking my picture."

Having a Bad Day?
A little guy was sitting at the bar staring at his drink when
a large trouble-making biker steps up next to him, grabs
his drink and gulps it down in one swig.

"Well, whatcha gonna do about it?" he says menacingly as
the little guy bursts into tears.
"Come on man," the biker says I didn't think you'd CRY. I
can't stand to see a man crying.

"This is the worst day of my life," says the little guy.
"I'm a complete failure. I was late for a meeting, and my
Boss fired me. When I went to the car park, I found my car
stolen
and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in
the cab I took home. I found my wife in bed with the milk
man and then my dog bit me.

So I came to this bar to work up courage to put an end to
it all. I buy a drink, drop the capsule in it and while I sit
here watching the poison dissolve, a smart ass like you
shows up and drinks the whole damn thing."

Last one tonight from my friends in the U.K. Sue and Bob.
about how the Internet got started. Quite clever. Thanks.

Well you might have thought that you knew how the Internet
got started, but here's the TRUE story. In ancient Israel, it
came to pass that a trader named Abraham Com did take
to himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long
of leg. Indeed, she had often been called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou
travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou
canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham looked at her as though she was several saddle
bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums
in between to send messages saying what you have for sale
and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And
the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by
Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her
way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an
immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at top
price, without ever moving from his tent.

But this success aroused envy. A man named Maccabia did
secrete himself inside Abraham's drum and began to siphon off
some of Abraham's business. But he was discovered, arrested
and prosecuted for insider trading.

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the
greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called "Nomadic
Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites," or NERDS. And lo, the
land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the
deafening sound of drums that no-one noticed that the real
riches were going to the drum maker, Brother William of Gates,
who bought up every drum maker in the land. and did indeed
insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates'
drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being
taken over by others."
And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as
it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects
what we are."

And Dot replies, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."
"YAHOO," said Abraham, and because it was Dot's idea, they
named it YAHOO Dot Com.
And that is how it all began. Truly.

Time to say Bye Bye my friends, and get settled down for the
night. Take good care of yourselves and those you love.
Watch out for those little things in life. My love and Best
Wishes to you all. Cheers, Merle.

Hi Merle, I will pop over and move the bin for you if you save me some of your home cooking! I have to do the bins at work and it is really confusing as to what goes out and when. I have 6 bins to take in and out plus the recycle tuns so if I get mixed up there is a lot of extra work to be done. Anyway I'm glad its warming up a bit for you and you can go and sit out in the garden.

I pray John has a safe trip and I bet you worry until he is safe back home. Those death facts are incredible. What precious things children say. I loved the internet on. I always enjoy coming by for a laugh or smile. Have a nice weekend.

"Little Things" was a lovely read tonight. And I love the Thunderstorms story.
I enjoyed the jokes too, especially the one about the little guy and the biker :)
Glad to know you're well and having some lovely weather. Wish we were too. Had our first snow showers today. Brrr! I don't like it one little bit. Give me Aussie sunshine any day!
Sending hugs your way. Happy Spring dear Merle!

Always like to hear about heroes. I like Sully, the guy who guided that plane down to a crash landing in the Hudson without losing a single passenger. But I'm still not crazy about flying. Guess I'll stay off donkeys too. Most of all, I'm glad I'm not a praying mantis, though sometimes I think my wife would like to bite my head off.

Hope your weather continues on the mild side and that you work your recycling and weeding out eventually.

Dear Merle, Once again, a truly enjoyable post. Loved the Facts of Death.

So sorry to hear about your dear friend. That's nice that your brother is flying down and renting a car for the two of you to go to the funeral.

Also glad you are having some nice weather. It was a beautiful Fall day here yesterday, but we still need some rain.

The four daughters, one partner, three Grandchildren and my Mother are all going to be here today for dinner. And I don't have to cook anything, the girls are doing it all.

I still have this darn cough from my allergies, they say once we have a hard freeze, the allergies should clear up. Don't know, since I seem to be bothered year round. Hate to think I might have to start shots again.

Take care. Don't worry about the bin sitting at the street, if a neighbor doesn't like it and complains, then kindly ask them if they can move it, since you can't.
Take care my friend, Patty
