A Friend.

Post 328 - - - - - Monday, 1st October, 2007.

Hello My Friends ~~ How is the world treating you today or
tonight, whatever the case may be? Hopefully, all is going
well for you. I am fine tonight, had a couple of days feeling
a bit under the weather.

I had a phone call from my nephew, Marcus, Peter's son, who
is holidaying in Victoria at present. He and his wife, Carolyn
and their two youngest kids, Jordan and Paul are coming to
visit me and stay a night, which will be great. They are hoping
to go to see some snow on the mountains tomorrow.

Wisteria photos tonight, in the wrong order !!!

The blossoms in the garden after strong winds.

And on the path - a real floral carpet.

I took this late afternoon with the sun on it, which changes the color a bit.
It still looks very nice. On the bush and on the ground !!

The first item tonight was sent to me by my dear friend Ann and it
is a nice one called "A Friend." Thank you Ann.

In the light of recent life events, the following piece, a framed gift
from Uncle Bill to Uncle Jim given many years ago, takes on
added meaning. It hangs on Jim's wall and there isn't a time it's
read that tears don't come to the eyes.

Is there someone you've been meaning to visit, invite over, write
a letter to, or just call? Don't put it off.

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end;

Yet days go by, and weeks rush on;
And before I know it a year is gone.

And I never see my old friend's face,
For life is a swift and terrible race.

He knows I like him just as well
As in the days when I rang his bell

And he rang mine. We were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men;

Tired with playing a foolish game,
Tired with trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow," I say, "I will call on Jim,
Just to show I am thinking of him."

But tomorrow comes - and tomorrow goes,
And the distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner ! - yet miles away . . .
"Here's the telegram, Sir . . . Jim died today.

And that's what we get, and deserve in the end;
Around the corner, a vanishing friend.

Time for some jokes - - - -

It's the summer of 1957 and Harold goes to pick up his date,
Peggy Sue. Harold is a pretty hip guy with his own car and a
duck tail hairdo. When he goes to the front door, Peggy Sue's
mother aswers and invites him in.

"Peggy Sue is not ready yet, so why don't you have a seat?"
Peggy Sue's mother asks Harold what they're planning to do.
Harold politely replies that they will probably just go to the
ice cream shop or to a drive-in movie.

Peggy Sue's mother responds, "Why don't you kids go out and
screw? I hear all the kids are doing it."

Naturally this comes as a surprise to Harold and he says, "Whaat?"

"Yeah," says Peggy Sue's mother. "We know Peggy Sue likes to
screw. Why she'd screw all night if we let her !"

Harold's eyes light up and he smiles from ear to ear. Immediately
he has revised the plans for the evening. A few minutes later,
Peggy Sue comes downstairs in her little poodle skirt with her
saddle shoes, and announces she is ready to go.

Almost breathless with anticipation, Harold escorts his date
out the front door while Mum is saying, "Have a good evening
kids." With a small wink for Harold.

About 20 minutes later, a thoroughly dishevelled Peggy Sue
rushes back into the house, slams the door behind her and
screams at her mother, "Dammit, Mum. The Twist !! The
Twist!! It's called the Twist !!!?

when a small two-seater Cessna plane crashed into a cemetery.

Passengers aboard a luxurious cruise ship were having a
great time when a beautiful young woman fell overboard.
Immediately there was an 80 year old in the water who
rescued her.

The crew pulled them both out of the treacherous waters.
The captain was grateful as well as astonished that the white-
haired old man performed such an act of bravery.

That night, a banquet was given in honor of the shop's
elderly hero. He was called forward to receive an award and
was asked to say a few words.

He said, "First of all, I would like to know who the b*****d
was who pushed me is !!"

Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital.
One day, while they were walking past the hospital swimming
pool, Jim suddenly jumped in at the deep end. He sank to the
bottom and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. .
She swam to the bottom and pulled him out.

When the Head nurse became aware of Edna's heroic act she
immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital as
she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news, she said, "Edna, I have good
news and bad news. The good news is tou're being discharged since
you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and
saving the life of another patient, so I have concluded that your act
displays sound mindedness.

"The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in the
bathroom with his dressing gown belt right after you saved him.

I am sorry but he is dead."

Edna replied, " Oh he didn't hang himself. I put him there to dry. How soon
can I go home ?"

I love that....a poem that is sad then a change to some laughter right when it was needed :)

I love the poem. It is something to think about alright. I think most of us have a friend just like that whom we need to call on sooner than later. Thank you for sharing this poem, it definitely made me think about a particular friend.

These were quite funny anecdotes. I think my husband and son will get a kick out of them as well. I am for sure printing them out and showing them when they get home this afternoon. Thank you.

I'm glad you visited me so that it lead me here. I am enjoying your posts and am off to read some more of them. Have a great day :)

I read a post some time back this summer...that showed a picture of blossoms on the ground much like you did. They had the whimsical idea that when you run up on this that there has been a "fairy wedding" and the blossoms were strown before the bride and groom...Fanciful but fun!

Love & Hugs to you today!

first story reminds me of a friend of mine.we were driving past his place one day my ex and I long before we split up.I said we should really stop and visit rod.but hubby said its late and we need to get back to milk the cow,s.
in only a few days we heard he had passed away.he had been having breakfast with his girlfriend when he fell over dead.they said he had a aneurism.he was just talking to her and he was gone that fast.
it was very sad, cause he had asked his mom many times over a few weeks if she would give him the money so he could go to the Doctor.
she didnt.
and guess she really took it hard when she found he died.
God bless you Merle have a great week.hope your feeling 100 % soon.

That's a lovely big wisteria you have there, Merle. I was going somewhere the other day (can't remember where, last week is a blur) and I saw a big one growing wild. Well, it wasn't in a garden and there was no house.

Whatever, it was in full flower and looked just beautiful. The jacarandas will be blooming here any time now...and the kids will be sitting exams!

Take care. Hugs xoxo

Hello dear Merle:-)

I'm a bit behind with visiting but I'm trying my best to get caught up with everyone!! I so enjoyed my weekend away but the 6 hour drive home always drains me...it will take me a few days to get back on track:-)

Oh, Merle, how wonderful that you were able to get together with some fellow bloggers!! Loved seeing the pictures of all your smiling faces...I'm very familiar with Meow and Jeanette:-)

I do hope you're feeling better these days? My head cold is still bothering me but starting to get better.

Your wisteria is gorgeous....even on the ground! lol Such beautiful blooms!! Take care my friend:-) xoxo

Glad you are feeling better. About a mile or so from us is a huge wisteria that has climbed to the top of a pine that is about 70 feet tall. In the spring the blossoms cover the whold tree - it is taking a toll on the pine though. ec

Well Merle my dear, the news that Chris Judd has picked Carlton should make you feel even better.
Chris is a true champion and a great leader! He will be a great asset to your club.
I am certainly relieved he never picked Collingwood!

Ps Loved the Wisteria. So gorgeous in flower!
