Post 546 ~ ~ ~ Friday, 12th December, 2008.
Hello Everyone ~~ We have had a day of steady rain today, which has been good, but we
don't often get it in summer. It has been quite cool also. I kept warm by cooking meals.
A piece of corned beef, potatos, sweet potatos, green beans, carrots and cabbage. And white sauce with chopped onions in it to put over the meat. Looks nice to me.
I hope all is well at your place, and I hope you all have a great weekend. It is 8.30 pm on
Friday night here, so ours is very close to arriving.
A few photos to show you.
This is my other Hoya and is called "Hoya Bella," which means white one. I showed the pink one
recently.
This is a tree fern with a fuchsia beside it, and some of it growing in the fern. Strange !!
It is a nice fine small Fuchsia that my Mother used to grow, called "Tom Thumb."
Another strange one at my house. My stag fern is covered in self grown Maiden Hair Fern.
I don't think there is much life in the Stag-horn fern though.
As the story tonight is rather long (but good) I will get on to it. My dear friend
Jeanette sent it to me today. Thanks a lot, Jan. Good story.
Anyone who has pets will really like this one.
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named "Lucky." Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit, they would warn their friends not to leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would go missing.
Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease . . . in fact she was just sure it was fatal.
She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled Lucky. A thought struck her . . . what would happen to Lucky? Although the three year old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through.
If I die, Lucky would be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so
exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife
comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overtook her and she dozed.
When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned. While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box, but Mary remains his greatest treasure.

Remember . . . .live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget. . . the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us.
If you see someone today without a smile, give them one of yours.
Live simply. Love seriously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
A small request: All you are asked to do is keep this circulating.
Dear God, I pray for the cure of cancer. Amen.

Thank you Robyn for this first joke. I liked it. It is called Thhe Dog's Choice.
Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs all fall over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time.
The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.
Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, "The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an
imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me.
The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says, "I love liver and cheese."
"Oh, how childish," said the Poodle."That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever."
She turns to the shiny Golden Retriever and says, "How well can you do?"
"Um. I HATE liver and cheese," blurts the Golden Retriever.
"My my," said the Poodle. "I guess it's hopeless. That's just as dumb as the Lab's sentence.
She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, "How about you, little guy?"
The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua.
He gives her a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Lab and says, . . .
(OK, are you ready for this?)
"Liver alone, Cheese mine."

Never lose your grandkids. Thanks you dear Linda May.
A small boy was lost at a large shopping mall.
He approached a uniformed policeman and said, "I've lost my grandpa."
The cop asked, "What's he like?"
The little boy hesitated a moment and then replied :
"Johnnie Walker Black Label Whiskey and women with big boobs."

This poem was nominated by UN as the best poem of 2008. Thank you Sherrill.
Written by an African Kid.
When I born, I black
When I grow up, I black
When I go in the sun, I black
When I sick, I black
And when I die, I still black.
And you white fellow
When you born, you pink
When you grow up, you white
When you go in the sun, you red
When you cold, you blue
When you scared, you yellow
When you sick, you green
And when you die, you gray.
And you calling me coloured.

It was the day after Christmas at a church in San Francisco. The pastor of the church and
noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from the cradle. He immediatey turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon walking down the street. And in the wagon
was the figure of the baby Jesus. So he walked up to the boy and said, "Son where did you get that little baby Jesus inyour wagon?"
The little boy replied, "I got him from the church.
"And why did you take him?" asked the pastor.
The little boy replied, "Well, about a week before Christmas, I prayed to the little Lord Jesus
I told him if he brought me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around the block in it."

Wee Hughie came into the office an hour late for the third times in one week and found the boss waiting for him.
"What's the story this time Hughie?" he asked sarcastically. "Let's hear a good excuse for a change."
Wee Hughie sighed. "Everything went wrong this morning. The wife decided to drive me to the Harbour. She got ready in ten minutes and then the ferry didn't turn up. Rather than
let you down,I swam across the river, ran over the mountain, borrowed a bicycle and
cycled the 20 miles through the glen to this office, and here I am."
"You will have to do better than that, Hughie," said his boss, disappointed. No woman
can get ready in ten minutes."

A girl and a guy are having a drink together in a bar. The man raises his glass and says,
"Here's hoping you're in heaven ten minutes before the devil knows you're dead.
"What's that mean?" asks the girl.
"That," answers her date, " is an authentic Irish toast."
"Oh, well, here's to bread, eggs and cinnamon."
"Bread, eggs and cinnamon? What's that ?"
The girl said, "That's French toast,"'

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around, "What are you doing?" she asked.
"Hunting flies," "Oh, Killing any?" she asked.
"Yep, 3 males and 2 females," he replied.
"How can you tell them apart?"
He responded, "3 were on a beer can and 2 were on the phone."

Did you hear about the blonde hitch-hiker?
She left early to beat the traffic.

What kind of candle burns longer, a red candle or a green candle ?
Neither. Candles always burn shorter.

Enough for this post, I hope you found something of interest. Take good care of your
loved ones and yourselves. My love and best wishes to you all. Cheers, Merle.

It can't be cold at your place, lol ! Here we have 0°C for the moment that's quite cool ! If I chop onions I cry like a waterfall !
Hi there Merle,
I like the pictures of your wonderful ferns. I have a few types of fern. There is something special about ferns to me. They seem so timeless in their appearance. They could be a new species or millions of years old!
I also like the Grandpa ,whiskey and mammaries joke. That would be me for sure Merle........
Hi Merle, As a dog lover the best friend dog story was great, the joke about the little boy I enjoyed too.
Hi Merle. As usual your jokes are great!
I think your maiden hair frwn is just darling. And it chose a very interesting place to grow.
We had an awful rain and wiond storm here today. I had to go our for more postage stamps but thankfully the rain and wind let up just long enough for me to do it.
I made a couple pies today. One is Pineapple Cheese cake pie. HAHA I made up the recipe. The other is another I made up. Milky Way Pie. Some of my kids are coming tomorrow to help me get decorations up providing we aren't all snowed in! Snow is predicted for tomorrow.
I am going to make hamburger soup tomorrow for them and one of the girls is bringing some kind of bread, so we will have a hot and filling meal.
Thanks for posting the picture of your fern. It blessed me. new life grows everywhere.
Beautiful plants - I like the fern tree. And no, no woman can get ready in 10 minutes - it takes me 2 hrs!
I did get ready in 10 minutes once and it was so traumatic I've never forgotten it...
A bit cool down your way, eh? Wish I could say the same here. We haven't had humidity like this for so long thanks to the drought, that we're really feeling it with all the rain...and looking out the window, some more is on the way very shortly. My skin leaks really badly in this weather.
Love and hugs.
Merle I've laughed so much it's made my day. My husband really enjoyed the grandad story too.
I suppose you just have to say like we do all year round, "Well the rain's good for the garden".
Merle
Yummy. I think I should head over for dinner. I have no idea what I will fix for dinner. But I need to come up with something for the hungry animals. Thanks for the award and I will post it as soon as possible. Love the ferns and flower. Glad y'all got some rain. Peace
Merle
I found your blog through my granddaughter...Love it. Happy end of summer. Come and visit my virtual world when you can!!
Linda
Oh, Merle, you always make me chuckle!!! You bring joy to so many people every day with your posts! And you put a lot of time getting them all together, too! Thank you, my dear friend!
I am trying to play 'catch-up' tonight...I am striving to do better and read more often. Bad time to try that, though, what with so much to do to get ready for the holiday. LOL
(((((( HUGS ))))))
My hoya...or I should say what's left of it, is pink. They smell so wonderful. Beautiful Merle!!!
Well, I just wanted you to know that I passed on the Christmas Spirit award to you today. Come by when you can and pick it up if you'd like.
HI Merle, Your plants and flowers are lovely. I liked the story about the dog, it almost made me cry. Funny jokes as usual! Take care.
Hi Merle
Your plants are blooming very well.
The rain is very conducive for their growth too =)
Hi Merle -- I hope your blonde did get a ride. Your dog stories were good too.
Katrin brings us her stuffed toys when we get home until we talk with her and pet her. Maybe your lady got all those pets because Lucky didn't get talked to or petted yet.
I doubt we will get any snow where we are this year. It was something special that Houston got theirs.
..
Hi Merle,
Your having the last day of spring and we're having the last week of fall. But tell that to my trees they're still dropping leaves every where.
I like the story of Lucky the dog, that covered his mistress in love. Quite a story. ;)
